Government buildings serve the public on a fixed schedule and rarely have the option to close because a fire protection system is down. Courthouses, city halls, permit centers, libraries, community and senior centers, transit facilities, public works shops, utility buildings, and emergency operations centers all fall under the same Washington State Fire Code requirement: an occupied building with an impaired alarm, sprinkler, standpipe, or fire pump system needs notification and an approved fire watch until the system is restored.

Officers coordinate with facilities managers, building engineers, and security staff, and are briefed on screening, badging, and escort requirements before their first patrol so the watch does not stall at the front desk.
